General Information
Introduction
The St. Louis Muny is the nation's largest outdoor musical theatre. In a ten week period, The Muny presents seven musical theatre productions. This summer, internship positions will be granted to college students wishing to pursue a career in theatrical production, production management, stage management, music direction, direction/choreography, as well as scenic, lighting or sound design.
Qualifications for Internship
The internship will be based on an applicant interview and two letters of recommendation. Preference will be given to theatre majors or its equivalent. Internships will be awarded based on experience, presentation and academics.
Rewards
The rewards of the program are in a large part determined by the individual. They will be working with professional actors, directors, choreographers, stage managers, designers, producers, technical crews and managerial personnel. They will have "hands-on" opportunity to participate in seven professional musical theatre productions during an intensive, demanding summer at America's largest outdoor musical theatre. This program can act as a gateway toward a career in professional theatre and answer questions on how to pursue it.
Compensation
A sum of money has been allocated to each internship position and will be discussed at the time of the interview. Housing options are also available to a select number of out of town applicants.

Production Office Internship
Description
Three positions available
Interns will assist the Associate Producer and Executive Producer for all seven productions for The Muny's 2008 season. The participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with producing large-scale Broadway musicals. While learning the "ins and outs" of producing a musical, the participant will work closely with all the designers, actors, directors and choreographers working at The Muny.
Requirements
Internships last for the entirety of The Muny's summer season. Applicants should have an interest in musical theater and arts administration. Candidates should be proficient with Macintosh computers and have the ability to stay organized and work independently or as part of a team. Candidates should be affluent in Microsoft Word and Excel. Candidates will be expected to work 35-45 hours a week. Because these interns have quite a bit of contact with everyone at the Muny, candidates must have excellent people and communication skills.
Production Management Internship
Description
One position available
Intern will assist the Production Manager for all seven productions for The Muny's 2008 season. The participant will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Muny Design Office that includes two set designers, two lighting designers and a sound designer. The intern can be expected to work with them to help implement their designs as well as help purchase materials for building sets and props. In addition to working with the designers, the intern will also collaborate with the union carpenters to determine the best materials for each project. By working directly with the production manager, the participant will also help create and implement run sheets for every show.
Requirements
Applicants should be knowledgeable in Photoshop. A working knowledge of AutoCAD is also desirable, but not necessary. Applicants must have a reliable vehicle and will be expected to attend Saturday midnight tech rehearsals each week in addition to a regular 40 hour work week. Candidates should consider this position as not only an opportunity to learn about production management in a high-paced summer stock environment but also as an opportunity to contribute his/her own skills to the process. Stage Management Internship
Description
Three positions available
Each intern will have the opportunity to work as a Production Assistant and a functioning third member of the stage management team with Broadway caliber AEA Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers. They are hired on a per show basis but typically work on multiple productions throughout the summer. Interns work from the beginning of the Stage Management’s pre-rehearsal work through the end of the run (three weeks total per show). Interns work directly under the Assistant Stage Manager throughout rehearsals while maintaining the rehearsal environment, managing props, and acting as a conduit between the Stage Management team and the rest of The Muny's staff. During performances interns will act as a functional ASM and are responsible for running a given side of the stage.
Requirements
Applicants should have a strong interest in musical theatre and in Stage Management. Because the interns function as an actual member of the stage management team, this internship requires a strong background in Stage Management. Interns should be highly proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Interns should also be fluent in theatre vernacular as well as being able to follow lead sheets along with all other stage management paperwork. The extreme importance and high stress of this job requires applicants should have strong problem-solving skills.
Creative Staff Internship
Description
Two positions available
Each intern will have the opportunity to work hand in hand with our directors and choreographers for at least three shows (a six-week minimum commitment). Interns will have the opportunity to observe and assist the creative staff from a show’s first production meeting through the opening night. Interns will be expected to manage the creative staff’s schedule of appointments, take notes at all rehearsals, and be a general conduit between the creative team and the production staff.
Requirements
Applicants should have an interest in directing and/or choreographing in musical theater. A knowledge of stage terminology is a must. Candidates should be proficient with Macintosh computers and have ability to stay organized and work independently or as part of a team. Candidates should have experience using Microsoft Word and Excel. Candidates will be expected to work 35-45 hours a week. Because these interns have quite a bit of contact with everyone at the Muny, candidates must have excellent people and communication skills.
Music Direction Internship
Description
One position available
An intern will have the opportunity to work directly with our musical directors on every show (a nine-week minimum commitment). The intern will have the opportunity to observe and assist the musical director from a show’s first production meeting through the opening night. Interns will be expected to help make changes in orchestra parts, organize music, take notes at rehearsals, and be a general conduit between music director and the production staff.

Applicants must be able to read music. Candidates should be proficient with Macintosh computers and have the ability to stay organized and work independently or as part of a team. Candidates will be expected to work 35-45 hours a week. Because these interns have quite a bit of contact with everyone at the Muny, candidates must have excellent people and communication skills.
Scenic Design Internship
Description
One position available
The Scenic Design Intern will work in the Muny Design Studio. The Studio is home to a creative staff including two United Scenic Artists (USA) Scenic Designers and their two USA Assistants, two USA Lighting Designers and their assistant, a Production Manager and a Production Management Intern. This year, the Studio will include three design interns, in scenery, lighting, and production management. The Scenic Design Intern serves as the primary model builder for the MUNY season of seven shows. Working from designer elevations, technical plans and paint elevations, the colored models are presented at the weekly production meetings. Previous model building experience is necessary but need not be at an advanced level. Frequently, the Scenic Design Intern assists the design teams in preliminary development of design concepts. Often he or she will assist with set dressing. Depending on the artistic abilities, there may be opportunities to design specific units from concept to finished drawing and elevations.
Requirements
Applicants should have a strong interest in Scenic Design and musical theatre. Applicants need to be computer literate and familiar with Adobe Photoshop. A working knowledge of AutoCAD is also desirable, but not necessary. Candidates need to be artists. The Design Studio is a creative environment of artists who share common objectives. Becoming a member of this family is a significant aspect of the job. A sense of humor also helps. Applicants who pass the initial screening will need to supply a portfolio, when requested, and will undergo a telephone interview/s.
Lighting Design Internship
Description
One position available
Each intern will have the opportunity to work as functioning third member of the Lighting Design team with Broadway caliber Lighting Designers. Each designer does a block of 3 or 4 shows and is in residence during this time. Interns work from the week before focus until the opening of the final production. Interns will work as a conduit between the Lighting Designer and his assistant, the union crew, stage management and the rest of the Muny staff. The intern will also research most equipment rentals and effects. The Muny is a large outdoor venue, seating approximately 11,000, with a stage 90 feet wide and approximately 75 feet deep. The only tech rehearsal occurs between 12 midnight and 5am on a Saturday evening. This rehearsal is more of a run-through than one would expect. This is the only time to see cues prior to opening night. All cues are entered in the board through expression off-line and edited in this rehearsal, live, or through the offline editor the next day. A roughly 400 unit repertory plot is used on each show, with limited specials focused in the 45 minutes prior to that rehearsal. Speed and impeccable organization are required.
Requirements
Applicants should have a strong interest in Lighting Design, and musical theatre. Applicants need to be computer literate, familiar with PC operating systems including networking, and be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint Lightwright 4, PhotoShop, Illustrator and VectorWorks. The applicant should be familiar with all standard lighting equipment, lekos, fresnels, parcans, follow spots, scrollers, strobes, DMX and LEDs. A working knowledge or better of AutoCAD is also desirable. The candidate should be competent in the Expression board, and Expression Offline including the use and construction of parts, and effects. The applicant also must have a valid driver’s license and good map reading skills.
Sound Design Internship
Description
One position available
Intern will assist the Sound Designer in creating the sound design for all seven productions for the MUNY 2008 season. The participant will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with sound effects design and recording, voiceover and track recordings, MIDI and event control automation, and all aspects of sound designer/reinforcement as it relates to the specific needs of the MUNY and to general Broadway-scale sound design. The participant will work with the Designer to address the sound effect playback and reinforcement needs of each of the seven shows produced during the intensive summer season. This will include attending production meetings, recording sessions, and technical rehearsals. The MUNY utilizes a state-of-the-art audio system. As an intern in the sound department, participants will get an hands-on understanding of the various aspects of theatrical system design including speaker placement, system equalization and delay theories, automation and various computer based audio playback systems, outboard effects and dynamics control, and how these tools are brought together to create a theatrical design capable of addressing the unusual needs of the MUNY season and theatre space.
Requirements
Applicants should have an appropriate background in technical theatre and or music production. Applicants should be familiar with fundamentals of audio including an operational understanding of PA system design/ signal flow, console/mixer layout and operation, and general theatrical terms. Candidates should be proficient with Macintosh and PC computers and have ability to stay organized and work independently or as part of a team. Candidates will be expected to attend midnight tech rehearsals and Monday afternoon dress rehearsals. Candidates should consider this position as not only an opportunity to learn about theatrical sound design in a high-paced summer stock environment but also as an opportunity to contribute his/her own skills to the process.
